In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
John 1:1
Here, we are presented with a concept that helps us understand the Trinity. We have God and the Word. The Word was in the beginning as was God, therefore they are both eternal. The Word was with God, shows the union of purpose and thought. It appears that the two, Word and God, are distinct but one.
1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
We are not given much more to go on about the Trinity except that the Three—Father, Word, and Holy Ghost—are One. We do not have to understand any more than this to believe it. Before we can understand anything in the Bible, we have to believe it.
God has determined that divine things should enter through the heart into the mind, and not through the mind into the heart. In divine things, therefore, it is necessary to love them in order to know them.

1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
God was manifested in the flesh; that part of the Trinity that was made flesh was the Word.
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Romans 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Whom did God forknow that was predestined to be manifested as His Son? The Word.
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

God manifested himself in the flesh as his own son. The Word was with God, was God, was made flesh. We have God, the Word, made flesh; now all we need is the flesh.

Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

Luke 1:32-35 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: … 35And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Being born of a woman, Christ was not only the Son of God but the Son man.
Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
I and my Father are one.
