Congressional Secret Deals diminish the role of “We the People”.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., complained on Thursday that social media has ruined Congress’s ability to make secretive deals on legislation before it is released to the public.
Half the trouble with our government is the secrets kept from the people. All their debates and deals should be in the public’s eye, that’s transparency. How can “We the People” say something is good without knowing what deals were made, what we had to pay for it? The government needs to remember it is a representative of the people, not its ruler. How can we judge our representatives if acting behind closed doors? It is not just how they voted, but why, what deals did they make?
Congress could cut down on some of the deals if they would hold to the logical and reasonable rules such as not bundling legislation and requiring that all amendments to a bill must bear directly on the bill. It should not be scratch by my back and I’ll scratch yours, but let’s vote on your itch then on mine. This would cut down on the need to make deals.
