A Fellowship in Christ Jesus, IN the World, Not of the World
All Scripture Reference are KJV unless otherwise noted
Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.Â
Malachi 3:16
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15
The subject of the above sentence is “Thou”, the singular ‘you’. We know it is singular as it is addressed to “thyself”, not themselves, “workman” not workmen. Grammar has just been used to determine who is being spoken to. This is an injunction to each individual believer in Christ. We all are supposed to study the “word of truth” to be able to “rightly divide” it.
The command, and it is a command, does not provide instruction on what to study. It must be concluded that we are to study whatever is needed to “rightly divide the word of truth”—the Scriptures. Naturally, the study of the Bible itself is paramount to be able to compare Scripture with Scripture.
1 Corinthians 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
A certain amount of history, as well, is helpful in determining the correct placement of events. But, an understanding and ability to use basic grammar is necessity to understanding the Bible. As an example, examine Ephesians 2:8-9. It is amazing how many false teachings are based on faulty grammar.
Obtaining a working knowledge of basic grammar is not difficult. I recommend the following as a place to start.
The 2600 uses a lower grade level of English than the 3200. The new Programmed Grammar books can be expensive, but I have been able to find them used for a lot less.
