But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
James 3:14
If you keep the context of the whole chapter, it is speaking of controlling ourselves. To do this we need to put on the new man in Christ and walk in charity and humility. If our hearts are not right with God this cannot be done.
Philippians 1:15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:
If you envy and lust after what others have, you will be causing strife and contentions trying to tear down others.
Galatians 5:14-16 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 15But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. 16This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Romans 13:13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
