Ananias & Sapphira
Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, 35And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
Acts 4:34-35
But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
Acts 5:1-3
Hypocrisy, like so many others Ananias and Sapphira want to pretend to run with the big dogs but lacked the faith to do so. Hence, they lied to convince others they were equal to and should be treated as those who had the faith and trust in God that they did not. It is not men that we lie to, it is God.
They were lukewarm Christians pretending to be faithful which would have ended in hindering the truly faithful; their hidden weakness would have been a weight upon the faithful pulling them down. That is why God disdains the lukewarm Christians.
Revelation 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
The lukewarm will not stand, hinder, and disparage, those that will. The moral is, do not play Church, turn to God with all your heart.
